Wondering if there is an age for which a person should no longer drive at a speed greater than their age? I had a neighbor who was over 90 years old. He wore these racing shades, backed out of his driveway across the street from my house, and then would take off like a shot. Not sure that he ever turned his head while driving and since the shades he wore had black sides, I do not know if he could see with peripheral vision or not. My wife was talking with him once and stated to him that she noticed he likes to go fast. His response was, “I do like how these cars can go.”
I have also seen many people younger than that drive incredibly slow being careful because it took them time to process all that was going on around them. And then there was the person in the parking lot who backed out right in front of my because they were on their phone. They noticed I was right by the driver door after having backed out straight. They then took two back and forths to turn the wheel with one hand and head toward the exit. When they started going forward I noticed their trunk was open, bobbing up and down. They stopped half way into the incoming lane, blocking a car trying to enter, when I saw them looking around the car to find what was causing the apparent beeping noise, which was the open trunk of course. The incoming car went around them, at which time the person opened their driver door with their left hand and closed it thinking this was what was indicated by the beeping noise, while still talking on the phone to their ear with their right hand. They then pulled across to get into the outgoing lane and blocked yet another car trying to cross over to our side of the parking lot, with the trunk bobbing up and down. I do not know if the ever figured out that their trunk was open or if is swung up the next time they stopped, blocking their rear view, but they did pull out of the parking lot after what was a painful 5 minutes and two missed lights for me.
I have moments like this where I long for self-driving cars. May you enjoy this Happy Friday. Remember to subscribe on the Perspectives page.
