I used to think that the game Operation had it right. The shape of the incision is the shape of the bone, just like in the game of Operation. It made me think that surgeons always do that. We have a lot of shapes that do no match. There is a square box on a backboard with a round hoop. The square bean bags are tossed through a round hole for cornhole. I am teaching about the coordinates of points on a unit circle which are found from drawing a right triangle, then using the Pythagorean theorem which is based upon the area of squares attached to each side of the right triangle.
How did there get to be so many different shapes on the end of screws and bolts? Isn’t that how Mr. Allen and Mr. Phillips made their millions? There are different sizes of allen wrenches, which are hexagon shapes instead of rectangles for many bolts or plus signs for phillipshead screws. I can never get the right size of these tools for the shape on the end of the screws that came with the product I am building. And then someone started putting stars in place of the hexagons on screws. Who invented that one? Mr. Galaxy? Shouldn’t I benefit from all this too?
I want to propose a new shape to go on the end of a screw. How about a letter D? That should work well. And the screw driver won’t jump out of the groove like the others and wear through the head of the screw or chip the screw driver. A quick patent, pump out some screws, bolts, and screw drivers, and I make my fortune.
Someone will probably go on Shark tank with a letter S, get an investment of $200,000, and I will be left with unsold hardware. Anyone need some plant markers for their garden? Maybe this isn’t shaping up to be a good plan.

I always thought the same thing about lug nuts.. why couldn’t they standardize those so one wrench fit them all. Instead I have to have a “star” wrench which is really shaped like a cross???

Seriously yes, I have always been perplexed about it. And did Mr. Allen or Mr. Phillips get anything from this?
