The picture is from my son’s garden where this plant in front of my hand is actually wrapped around a fly and has it captured. How bizarre is that?
The saying goes, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” I get it. Look at the things that you have. The family, the job, the friends, the house, and the talents that you have are worth twice the ones that you do not have, mostly because you have them. Focus on these because you can enjoy them and use them, and do not waste your thoughts on what is not around you.
But I am curious about the literal phrase here which has given me two thoughts to share. First, has anyone ever had a bird in the hand? Not an easy feat to accomplish! I once came home from work and heard some strange noises as soon as I opened the door. I quickly closed the door and went over to get my neighbor. I did not want to go into my house alone. We were both a little scared and on high alert as we got to the garage door. With the door open, we again heard the noises I first heard. Our conclusion was that it was an animal, my neighbor suggested that it sounded like a bat. Once we went inside we saw the bird in the middle of the floor. It freaked out upon seeing us and tried flying into the window, then landed on the couch. The end result was that I used a blanket to cover the bird as they remain more calm in the dark, then released it outside. I really never counted that as a bird in the hand, though it was the only time that I have ever held one.
My second point is what are two birds in the bush worth? If you actually are considering a value that you can attribute to the worth of two birds in the bush, then I have a woodpecker that I want to sell you. What are you offering?
