Don’t be the subject of stories like the one below. There is a mental processing that needs to take place within all of us when we make decisions. I am not even talking about right and wrong here, because most likely people who make these kinds of incomprehensible decisions know right from wrong. But they do not consider how others perceive their statements or actions, and how it will affect either the relationships with those people, or affect other people who are involved in the situation. The title of my website says that it is about perspectives, and that I use the definition given as observing in a true relationship. Do people not consider the reality of the consequences of these out of touch events? As an example, I heard a story today of a person who was in an interview trying to get into a Masters program, when asked why they wanted in this program responded with, “Because my friend did it and said it was easy.” Truth? Yes, clearly it was straight up truth in explaining their decision. Did they consider who would want them for sharing that piece of information? Or if the interviewers did accept them, what that would say about the program?
I hope to encourage everyone to think. That is the primary action that I require of my students, that I want to see from them daily, and that I try to teach is most important in getting through all of the complexity of this life.
(Bill holding up a paper with letters written 1.5 Inches high.)
Bill the Boss: Hey George, what’s this?
George: A routing.
Bill the Boss: I know it is a routing, George, but why are the letters written so big?
George: Because I wrote with my left hand.
(As Bill turned red, I could see steam coming out of his ears)
Bill the Boss: Ok George….. (Exhaling slowly)…. why did you write with your left hand?
(George holds up right index finger with band aide)
George (whining voice): Because I had a cut on my finger.
Not making this up or tricking you because it is April 1st. Nor was George trying to be funny. He really did, and he told the truth. Names were not protected because there was no innocent party. Bill, wherever you are, I pray you are sailing every day that you can on those calm blue waters you love. I know that you loved your Happy Friday afternoons away from the office sailing on Lake Erie. When those priceless moments come, savor them. Have a Happy Friday. Remember to subscribe on the Perspectives page.
