I had a group of 8th grade students staying for extra help after school to prepare for a test. Actually, they were all girls. After we worked through the first example, we started the second one with all of them writing a couple of lines of the geometry proof on their own. The student sitting next to me had a song in her head, then suddenly turned toward me bursting into the lyrics of the song with a, “Oooohh, I just wanna love you!” She casually returned her gaze to her paper and continued writing. I looked at the other students around the table and their eyes expressed the shock they were feeling, mouths hung open just before catching themselves and quickly trying to mask the feeling. Suddenly, the student next to me who had just sung those words, gasped, looked up across the table and exclaimed to the others, “Oh my God I just sung that to a teacher!” The laughter reduced the tension completely.
What is it about music that in an almost random situation someone can have feel-good music in their head? I had a recent encounter with a couple of different types of songs in my head. For several weeks I was waking up in the morning humming a very good song called Promised Land, and smiling through the words. Then, I spent a weekend with my grandchildren watching a movie called “Encanto”. After hearing the music from the movie repeatedly in the car and on the TV all day, I woke up the next day singing, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. To my dismay, the war in the brain was on.
While there is a lot to say about music, I decided to keep the point here simple. Music touches us deeply, to our inner beings. Therefore, make sure the words in the songs on your heart are worth keeping with you. Sing the fun songs loudly on karaoke night, but wake up with good words playing through your head to start the days off well. Not sure if we were made for music or if music was made for us. Hmm, that could be a line in a song.
Hope your Happy Friday starts with a good lyrics and a fun song. When those musical moments come, belt them out. Have a Happy Friday. Remember to subscribe on the Perspectives page.
