Bzzzzz

There is a lot around us that is a mystery. I hope you take some time on occasion to marvel at the wonder of it all. I have a picture on my site showing a fly caught in a swirl of a plant. Now how does that plant move fast enough to do that? Anyone seen karate kid? Mr. Miagi cannot catch a fly with chopsticks in the air. We have to use a fly swatter to move fast enough to hit one before it flies away. So how does that plant tighten around the fly fast enough to catch it.

I was gong to talk about communication a little. Animals communicate but we often do not give them credit. We just hear noises or see actions that do not mean anything. A large dear was at the edge of the woods in my back yard. I walked out into the yard and got a picture. The deer looked at me, then with the right foot, raised it and stomped while still looking at me. I raised my right leg and stomped it while looking back. I swear that deer did a double take – head turned away then back, turned away then back. Then it stomped again. I do not know what I communicated to that deer but decided against repeating that statement, and slowly backed away. I wonder what other signals I can send through motions to a deer. Does it matter if I use my arms?

I am curious about many other animal communications. How does a bee understand another bee giving it directions to some honey from a bee dance? Bees do not make any noise other than with their wings. Standing in my back yard again I heard the buzz of bees above my head. There was a branch extending from our large tree over the yard, and there were about 10 been in one spot on the branch. Then there were 20. Then 30. I was able to follow away from the branch and see a trail of bees flying towards it, all landing on the other bees creating a ball around one spot of the branch. This happened for over 1 minute until I no longer heard the bee buzz. The ball of bees was almost the size of a volleyball. Something was going on there. My guess is a queen bee was relocating the hive and they all followed her. But she needed a rest stop. Hard to believe it is much rest when 500 bees pile around you. About 10 minutes later I saw a group of bees fly off from the bee ball, A steady flow of bees followed the first group of bees for about 1 minute until a few stragglers were left on the branch. They must have been the bottom wall and were smushed a bit, but eventually took off to follow the group.

May your Friday bee a Happy one. Remember to subscribe on the Perspectives page.
