I am so excited when I even think about castles, even more so getting to go to one. Only seen a few, but every time I love the history, the layout of the rooms, the decor, and the stories behind the people who either lived there or built the castle. I want to take a minute to contrast a couple of castles.
Castle in Ireland
Land Acquired by conquest
Built 800 years ago
Conquered 350 years later
More fortification added
Another 125 years til a Lord moves in
Eagles added for family Coat of Arms
Purchased by Beer company
Given to son of beer company owner
Restored Victorian furnishings
Operated as a hotel
Castle in USA
Land bought by Engineer
Built 120 years ago
Sold by wife during depression at loss
Given to son and family
Added wine to wine cellar
Bowling alley added for parties
Pool added for children
Sold to Elks club
Sold to city – pool and alley gone
Occupied by board of education
Nothing about the castle in USA was built for fortifications. Why would it be? There was no conquest going on here. But when I think about it, the motivations behind why they were built were similar. Beautiful location, good visibility, luxury, and prestige of living there. What is not to love about a castle? Wait! I am an educator. Why should I not be able to go work in the USA castle? Retirement plan in the making here. Though, it is a State school district, I might not even have to wait for retirement. Better plan formulating.
Meanwhile, I hope that you have a Happy Friday filled with great thoughts, like working in a castle. Remember to subscribe on the Perspectives page.
