Have you ever worn something thinking that it would keep you from getting wet? I even wore a poncho that claimed to be rain gear, and when I was finally inside, I was soaked everywhere. Water got through the rain gear. Most of us have heard the terms which explain why. They are resistant verses repellent.
Resistant means we get hit by the water, it beads up, then it rolls off. Until there is enough water to cover the surface, giving the water time to soak in, eventually passing through the materials to the inside. Repellent means send it the other way. The surface of the repellent material does not allow water to pass through.
It occurred to me that this applies to how we approach any negativity that hits us. Do we resist it, or repel it? Resisting it would mean if we are hit by only a few negative actions or thoughts, we feel none of it because it does not get into us. Eventually though, there will be enough negativity to coat our surface layer, giving it time to soak in and cause us to get wet. That is when we feel it, making us miserable and aware constantly of the wetness.
If we repel the negativity, it bounces off, gets deflected away from us so that none gets through. We do not feel the effects even when there seems to be a lot around us. While wearing the repellent gear, we know to limit our movements or actions to not expose ourselves completely to the down pouring water. Please notice though, that eventually we change out of that repellent gear into something more comfortable to relax in, giving the gear a chance to dry, and letting us be less rigid or unfeeling while we are away from the negative situations.
We must learn how to wear and when to wear ‘negativity‘ repellent gear, have a position or stand we can take against negativity, so that we are kept from reeling in its brutal effects. But, don’t forget to take it off. The point here is not that you don’t feel anything, but just the opposite. You can feel the joy that you want to feel, share the love that you have, know the peace that you have found, and not have any of it stolen from you. Negativity robs us of all of these.
