Who’s Leading?

Did you ever get into situations and wonder how you got there? Especially with a group, how in the world do you all find yourselves in this strange place?

We joined our first Ski Club at school and were on our second outing. We got a lesson each time, then had an hour and a half to ski before taking the bus home. Our first night was exciting, because we learned how to be on skis for the first time. But it was in now way thrilling or even adventurous, because we remained on the “Bunny Slope”, or the baby hill the entire time. They taught us how to stop with a V shape, and turn by putting pressure on one ski. Our second lesson was more of the same, and we thought that we had mastered this basic skill after one or two extra runs down the baby hill.

Someone in the group of 5 of us decided to ask if there was a chair lift to go on, because all we had done was use the to go up the little slope. To our excitement, we were told to take the main lift up and go down the backside of the hill, or we could go down one slope to the far right, which was the easiest. What an adventure to go up the chair lift, and getting off was a great new experience!

We scanned our two options from the top, and seeing that no one was on the back slope, easily made our choice. We went down the hill as a group, making our big ‘C’ turns, swiping away chunks of the slope in 5 large sections, ones that were each as long as the baby hill. We observed the remaining part leading to the bottom, and one person said, “We can just go straight down from here and handle some speed.” One at a time we turned straight down the hill and sped for the bottom.

The first person to the bottom learned why no one was skiing this side of the hill. Once on the flat part, it because all icy. To make it worse, right in the middle was a large tree, and we all were heading directly for it. The only way to stop at that point was fall. The first person went down, but slid all the way to the tree trunk on their back, skis up above their body, and then bounced into the tree. I was second and repeated the same move. All five up us slid in their like a set of shuffleboard pucks, and were packed together against the tree with our skis tangled above us. And we died laughing right there for several minutes.

Finally done laughing, we shushed over to the lift going up, and the operator in the lift was still laughing. No problem it was still worth it.

Hope that you have a Happy Friday and remember to subscribe on the Perspectives page.
