Commercial Bliss

I have a new favorite commercial.

The scene is a bathroom with a well-dressed, magically clean looking young woman holding a phone, upon which can be seen a video chat. The man on the phone says, “Now attach the chain and that should have it fixed.” The loud rock music takes over and the woman sings, “I fixed this toilet, I fixed this toilet on video.”

I probably just like it because the song is 80’s rock’n roll. I am encouraged because I try to be handy, fixing everything myself that I can including plumping and electrical. Appliances are mostly off limits to fix, especially if they stop working all together. Drywall and woodwork are doable. I could see videos helping with these, but live chat? Not sure that I want anyone to see me while I do the work.

No, this commercial has more to its appeal than just fixing things. Most of the things I fix require an average of 3 trips to Home Depot, and a long afternoon to complete. Then there is the clean up afterwards, of me, the tools, and the parts, and the object worked upon. If I touched my phone at all during this process, then I would have to clean that as well.

Still, there is a huge appeal to the commercial.

It is my dream to be able to fix something without multiple trips to the store for parts. Since the commercial focuses on plumbing, I will not need a shower to clean the grime from my hands, the dust from having my hair inside the sink cabinet, and whatever is on my arms from rubbing all sides of the bowl. And…. There weren’t 4 wrenches and 3 screw drivers plus a drill to return to the proper locations. Let’s include the left-over parts which I may or may not be able to return to the store.

I cannot wait until I sing the song next time I work on the toilet. Before I put on the last piece, I am going to scan the house to make sure that no one is here. I hope that you have a Happy Friday.
