Sign Me Up!

Supply and demand, one of the basics of economics. When the supply exceeds the demand, it becomes very difficult to survive as a producer. When the demand is greater than the supply, the consumer has a terrible time getting the product and pays a higher price for it.

What if money is not involved? Does the law of supply and demand still apply? Absolutely! But you do have to think differently about it, or as I say, take on another perspective.

I believe that we are living in a time when shifts are taking place in many areas besides economics. We have been dealing with a lot of shortages of product in economics, so the demand exceeded the supply. There have been tons of jobs that businesses could not fill, so the supply exceeded the demand.

In coaching high school sports, there used to be tryouts for spots on the team, with players not in the top group getting cut. Many teams do not operate that way anymore. There is a shortage of players.

We have players say, “sign me up.” Yet they have no playing experience. Since there are not good players to take their spot, they make the team!

What I am curious about is whether this is a product of the every kid gets a trophy youth programs? Or is it a product because there are now more travel teams than ever so they do not get to play as young children? Women have excelled in sports more in the last 10 years than ever before. Is that actually a deterrent to the uncoordinated young girls if they feel they will never reach that level? Usually a winning year is followed by a boon in participation.

Wondering if I really don’t know how any of this operates. That’s ok, because I am not in charge.

Hope that you have a Happy Friday.
