Pick, Pick, Pick

Oh please, anything but the nose!! And to pick someone else’s? Not right.

There is one thing to pick from another human being that is a good thing. I had the chance one summer to attend a professional development. It said “Teaching and Engineering.” I was in for this one faster than a pig can dive into a pile of slop.

Before getting my teaching certificate, I earned a BS in Engineering from OSU. I spent 7 years working as an engineer. Once an engineer, always an engineer. This training was going to be at the prestigious engineering college of Case Western.

I was the bad student, but our trainers quickly understood my motives. When we went around for the tour, I was always the one left behind. We had a presentation in one room from some researchers, then the group all left for the next session, except for me. Instead, I walked up to the engineers and asked, “Is that what is going on inside a brain?” On a computer screen was the a sketch of a brain with red waves flowing through it.

They weren’t just happy to explain to me what they were doing. It was if they had just been accepted onto Lago Masters where someone finally recognized their talent. This happened again in the next room where the robotics presentation took place. I asked about the arm over in the corner. It was new tech that they were trying on someone to see if they could operate it using different muscles. Again, they were excited to share their work.

So my statement is, pick their brains. People want to share what they are doing.

Usually, bosses do not want to hear all that their workers know, as they would not dare let someone be smarter than they are. so these guys were eager to spill the inside information about whatever was coolest in their work. And I loved it. Whenever there is a chance, pick their brains.

Have a Happy Friday and pick away.
