The infamous Murphy’s Law states “If anything can go wrong, it will.”
We have to think that this poor Mr. Murphy went through the wringer with an important job he was trying to do. First, the parts don’t on together just right. Second, the tool breaks. Third, a mishap injures him causing a delay or postponement.
If you are an adult with a job, have tried to fix anything in a house or on a car, you have been through this. There is an axiom to this law which adds a phrase. “If anything can go wrong, it will, and at the worst possible moment.” This is the line used by people who go on a 2 week vacation and have a water pipe burst the first day that they are gone. Horrible, just horrible.
The actual point Mr. Murphy was making is the power in the first word of the law – that is the word ‘If’.
This is the reason why we put in double or triple checks of equipment. Emergency plans have been developed just in case the ‘If’ takes place and action plans were created to avoid it. The category of safety equipment would not exist if ‘If’s didn’t occur.
Because if we don’t account for ‘If’, then it is known ‘If’ will cause great harm. Hopefully, if we think about ‘If’, then ‘If’ may be prevented, or the effects of ‘If’ can be greatly reduced. What if we knew all of the ‘If’s? That is a pretty big “If”.
Have a Happy Friday.
