I had to remove this from my teaching to become good at what I do. This may be surprising, but the reasons add up.
Math person here so I had to look this up. Determination is a firmness on purpose.
Perhaps I am more familiar with this using the scientific definition which would be to establish something by calculation or research. As proof in teaching math, too many teachers expect that it is enough to show the calculations to convince students, thereby they have learned it. Then by determination, apply it to the work.
Long ago it was explained to me that this does not develop a deep understanding of material. Instead, it has to build upon their knowledge, then through persistence in learning students can master that concept.
Hearing noises in my chimney, I used a light to look up the flue to see the racoon perched on some side bricks. I came up with a brilliant idea to slide a light on a bendable pole up through the hole because he clearly did not like it. It worked wonderfully as he climbed out the top onto the roof. So I left the light there and went to watch the racoon crawl off my roof. Unfortunately, he did not learn through determination but had persistence due to his desire to get back into my chimney. He clung on the top edge and peered down at my light. I went to work only to find that when I got home the little bugger was sleeping next to the chimney waiting out the light so that he could get back inside. He was persistent meaning he had obstinate continuance in his course of action to get back in there.
That evening I used a water cannon and a hose to chase him off the roof back down the tree. Then I had to wrap the tree so he could not climb it, because I believed with that level of persistence he would have gone back in there during the night.
Hope you have a persistently Happy Friday.
