Honoring Mom

This is a special week. It is my mom’s birthday and she turns ninety.

I was helping her put up some new blinds but needed some scissors to cut the package open. When she handed them to me, I felt the wriggle in the connecting piece and saw the tainted metal of the handle, meaning these were not new. I commented to her about them.

“I think I will make an investment in getting you some new scissors. These have to be over 40 years old.” I chuckled at my huge over estimation.

She replied, “Oh, no, they’re older. They were my mom’s.”

This morning I took my dog Bo, only a year and a half old golden doodle, for a walk and thought about that length of time.

The scissors were more than 40 years old.

A chipmonk popped out on the trial in front of Bo and he nearly grabbed it. Not that little guy will live to be 2 as he might die from the fright he got.

The scissors could be more than 42 years old.

There were some trees I was passing, many younger than that. Scanning up the height of a tall one extending into the rarely seen blue sky, I thought it could be more than 60 years old.

The scissors could be older than that tree.

With the Tow Path going along the canal, many slow walkers were viewing the active wildlife which was simply doing what it had to do to prepare for the winter to come. The canal was been there since at least 1900.

The scissors were not as old as the canal since my grandma was born around the turn of the century.

Mom is special for still being able to smile at so many things. Her heart for doing things for people has marked her life. With or without her scissors she shows a love for her family with thoughts and prayers daily.

Hope you have a Happy Friday.

it was nice that your mom could tell you the Scissor’s story. A story of a pair of scissors that must have had hundreds of thousands snips and cuts to reach its current condition of being “wriggly”.
Perhaps a trip to a cutlery shop might be able to add another 100 years of use. Especially if placed in the right hands with an explanation of whose hands made the first cut.

True Bruce. She told me the scissors were actually sharpened, so they worked fine. My grandmother was a seamstress, and they were made in Germany. Interesting facts.
