Measure UP

How do we measure the value of a moment or a series of moments? There are enough commercials out there which tout that this costs $10, this costs $20, yet the moment they provide to the purchaser is priceless.

Be who you are because the moments that you are a part of measure equally with any others. No value can be placed on what you bring to those you encounter each day.

Went to the funeral of a friend whose father had passed away. As I proceeded down the line from the grandchildren to my friend and her husband, each expressed that they were prepared by knowing this was coming soon for over 6 months stretch. Since it was exactly how I felt through hearing about his steady decline, I sympathized with heartfelt understanding. Then I got to the wife and said I was sorry.

She replied, “I know, it was so sudden.”

It has been years now where I have not been able to express understanding for that response other than to say that as her spouse, he was a big part of her life.

But it wasn’t that at all.

Instead, it was because he was a special little part of all of the best moments they had together that made her laugh, made her smile, and brought a tear to her eyes from the warmth she felt in her heart. Sharing with me about one of those moments only the day before he dies, she expressed how those tiny moments made up a lifetime, and they were suddenly gone.

I said to be who you are and what that means is be joyful when you see people you know, smile at them and make them smile, build up moments like they are a pile of gems. Priceless gems.

Have a Happy Friday.
