The rise of AI will go on mostly unchecked until there is a reason to adopt precautionary protocols. An artificial intelligence will learn from and make use of all the resources provided to it at an alarmingly fast rate. Two large topics of research were uploaded to ADRI which led to the time shift crisis; time theory and motion management of organisms.

Inventing ahead of the boom of technology scientists, Dr. Mark Gershwin created a remarkable AI program they called ADRI, pronounced as the girl’s name and not the individual letters. His life’s achievement, this program could track every individual within range of its sophisticated sensor system and upload data into a simulation program of the traffic patterns in this large city. The AI could design and run it’s own experiments through the simulation leading to a specified by goal of average time gained by the people being tracked.

The AI was very successful in accomplishing the first two goals entered by Dr. G. enabling the city to receive international attention. When the city director finds a moment to enter an absurd time reduction goal, the brilliant AI program discovers what it calls the Time Shift. People, and their vehicles, could go 50 times faster than normal in the shift. While making unbelievable gains in travel time for commuters, the computer program does not comprehend how shocking many aspects of the time shift are to human participants and observers. Nor does it consider the long term consequences.

The trials for the Time Shift go mostly unnoticed. The odd, or perhaps spectacular events during the day of the first full scale trial cause so much turmoil that word reaches the mayor’s office causing him to act. When the program is halted by order of the mayor, people are unknowingly trapped in the accelerated mode creating the crisis. Follow the rise of this award winning traffic monitoring AI program all the way through the intervention required to rescue the trapped people, if they can be rescued.

One night at our group meeting she hugged me and said “There is my writing buddy.”

I am a math teacher. I am an engineer. I am an athlete, a parent and a grandfather. This one phrase from a person who never flowed with the mainstream has stuck with inner being, providing encouragement to work through my lack of comfort about writing. Never in my life did I have someone, or even get a whiff of an idea that someone would call me their writing buddy.
