Group Chat

I have been playing on-line games for a few years. Some offer group efforts so that players can work together. This usually includes group chat. A couple of times I have grown close to the players in my group. I learned many of their stories. I got to meet a really hilarious guy from Sweden, a lady who watched a crocodile on her front lawn, people who managed through the hurricanes or the blizzard storms, a truck driver who would pull over in a truck stop to have wifi for our meetings, an Fx guy in South Africa who worked on some movies I have seen(Gettysburg), and teachers as far apart as England and India. A few of us actually helped a teen get past suicide thoughts for almost a year. I now have some friends in interesting locations.

My point is that we live in strange times here, where I can chat with people all over the world every night, yet have only spoken to my neighbor 3 doors away a couple of times. I can do better than that. Group chat is fun, but building a relationship is lasting. Spring is here, yeah it will be gone again tomorrow, but it will be back next week. Be outside and greet those you live by. We are all neighbors, but we still have to be a neighbor. Something to think about as you have a happy Friday. Remember to subscribe on the Perspectives page.

I would love for you to share this post if you enjoyed it or have good thoughts from reading it. Leave a comment to share with me and thank you for your time here.

  1. Dave – love this post a lot! Social media, group chats, online interactions have all seemed to dominate and dictate our way forward. The problem is – they seem to provide a false sense of intimacy and lack the depth of connection you can get when you become friends with your neighbor. Great to recognize how important and rewarding the more challenging “in person” connections really are and to work toward developing those as well! Very cool to also have connected online with so many of the folks you describe. Have a great weekend.

  2. I agree, Eric. Great points. If we don’t model this to the younger people, they may never learn it.
