The future is here. They are making cars that drive themselves. You can buy one. The only good news I see so far is that you still have to have a driver’s license to take it for a spin. Maybe I am too simple or old school, but I think we should just be better drivers. But I have way too many questions to be excited about this.
Can I tell the car what speed to drive at on the highway just like cruise control?
Will it then change lanes if there is a slower car in my lane?
Are we going to have self driving lanes so that all of the cars go the same speed?
Since it is not legal to change lanes to pass on the right, does the car know this? Certainly not if it was made in Detroit because all Michigan drivers actually pass on the right when given the choice.
If my English is not very good and I tell it to drive at 65mph, will it think that I said 95mph?
If two cars that are driving themselves have an accident, whose fault is it? Talk about the definition of no fault insurance.
Carnegie used to change to one way traffic during the day. What if the car doesn’t know this?
It might sound like I am worried, but I am not. I do not worry. But I do have concerns. And I think that these questions will not be thought through before we see cars driving themselves. Their motivation is not safety, it is dollars.
I am excellent at parallel parking. Why would I trust a car to park itself? And whose fault is it if it fails? Will this smart car receive points on its driving record? Will the cars take you where you want to go and then go park by themselves. Will they talk to each other about their passengers and who not to drive places again? Wonder if they will come from the parking lot automatically and pick you up when you are ready to go, or if you will signal them to come. What if another car is listening to your signal and comes first. They will be called smarter cars. They used to be called chauffeurs.
Make this a Smart day and have a Happy Friday. Remember to subscribe on the Perspectives page.
